Leon Edwards Not planning on playing his next game in London.
The UFC was rumored to return to London in July, but welterweight champion Edwards said the turnaround came too soon for him after he retained his title against Kamaru Usman In the trilogy fight at UFC 286 in March.
Instead, Edwards (21-3 MMA, 13-2 UFC) is eyeing the Oct. 22 UFC 294 card in Abu Dhabi.
“Unless it brings in some stupid money, I might consider (London),” Edwards told Sky Sports. “The bag always talks. For some silly money, I might think about it. I started fighting less than a month ago, so I still have things to do. Literally next week I’m going to have to go back to the Camp. August to March, I’ve done that. Now they say March to July (next camp). I don’t think that makes sense.
“In the last year or so, I think I’ve played three games. I’d love to fight now for the end of the year. Kaka Abu Dhabi would be just fine. That would be the perfect timing. At that point in the world On the one hand, there is a large number of British people in the UAE, so I think there will be a lot of fans coming to see me as well. That would be ideal for me.”
Dana White announced Colby Covington as the top contender, but Edwards’ stance that Covington didn’t deserve the title still stood.
“In the division right now, there’s no clear No. 1 contender,” Edwards said. “Colby lost two and won one. Gilbert (Burns was) similar. I had to win 10 fights in a row to fight for the world title. These guys win one, lose one, and fight for the world title. and fight.
“Colby was uninjured, he sat on the sidelines and refused to fight for over a year. No one else has done that and won a title because of it. If you believe that you are a champion, you should fight with all that is offered to you. people fighting – Burns, Khamzat (Chimaevs).”
However, that doesn’t mean Edwards shies away from the challenge. If the UFC sticks with Covington, “Rocky” doesn’t care about the fight.
“I think of Colby Covington as a BTEC (community college) Usman — there’s nothing there,” Edwards said. “If that’s what they want, I’ll give it to them. Opponents don’t bother me, it’s just a date. … I remember when I was going through the pandemic, he was like, ‘Who’s Leon Edwards? Watching it now: he’s like begging me to shoot the champ. Times have changed. Now I’m king of the hill, I’ll sit back and let him beg some more, I’ll think about it. I earned it.
“He didn’t earn his spot. You can’t sit back unscathed for more than a year, say no to a fight and say, ‘Well, I want a title now.’ Now I’m a champion. I decide. Coe Colby isn’t a champion so doesn’t decide anything. That’s the difference. If it’s Colby, it’s Colby. It’s a similar fight anyway. …There’s nothing terrible about Colby.
