While private-sector employees reeled in fear of layoffs after tech giant Google cut jobs, Indian-American computer scientist Pradeep Kumar Khosla told a very different story. Khosla, the eighth president of UC San Diego, received a raise of up to $500,000.

The raise will bring Khosla’s annual base salary to $1.14 million starting Monday, May 1. That would make him the highest paid of the nine other presidents who lead UC campuses.

The Regents of the University of California reportedly made the decision to raise Khosla’s salary to prevent him from accepting the presidency of an unnamed private out-of-state university.
With the support and leadership of Khosla, who assumed the presidency of UC San Diego in 2012, San Diego’s enrollment grew from approximately 28,000 to more than 43,000 students. He also played a key role in ensuring that growing student housing needs were met through campus expansion.

“Because of what Pradeep has meant to San Diego, including helping to bring the Blue Line tram to campus and building a lot of housing, there is a very, very strong commitment from the community to get the job done,” said UC Regents Chairman Rich Lieb.
Khosla’s raise will be paid through a private endowment to the university. Private donors in the San Diego area have contributed about $13 million in total to endow a chair, Lieb told the outlet, whose interest income will cover the increased costs.
