Irthi to spotlight UAE’s commitment to sustainability amidst its rich heritage and complex culture at Milan Design Week 2023

SHARJAH: The Irthi Contemporary Crafts Council (ICCC), chaired by His Highness Sheikha Jawaher bint Mohammed Al Qasimi, wife of His Highness the Ruler of Sharjah, and an affiliate of the UAE-based NAMA Women’s Advancement Association (NAMA), have announced their participation in the highly anticipated Milan Design Week 2023. Held from 17-23 April, the event is the world’s largest annual design event and the council is preparing a unique showcase for attendees.

The committee is curating a unique showcase for event attendees that will spotlight interactions with craftsmen, architects, designers, urban planners, curators, researchers, artists, geologists, biologists, chemists and A collaborative effort of craft experts. Their work will showcase how they deftly combine tradition and technology to rediscover the history and roots of the UAE, and will amplify the way they use their skills to share their stories with the world.

Through Irthi’s participation in Milan Design Week 2023 this year, the Crafts Council will demonstrate how design can be an important driver of awareness for the conservation of crafts, and how this can be done by harnessing the talent and skills of local artisans, especially women, who are traditional crafts in most global cultures major practitioners and advocates. The traditional craftsmanship of Al Safafah, Al Zaffanah, Al Faroukha, Al Sadu and Al Gargour is celebrated in these contemporary collections.

The collections will also feature collaborations with individual artists and designers, including Ghaya Bin Mesmar, Barcelona’s Mermelada Estudio, Reem Saif Almazrouei and more.

The commission’s presentation at Design Week will also include two in-depth research efforts; exploring a return to original Emirati food preservation methods and a revival of ancient fermentation techniques that are still relevant, as a cross-cultural dialogue between Sharjah and Milan. The second production is a product of the Design Lab Research Fellowship, a collaboration between Irthi and the American University of Sharjah (AUS) presenting a growing library archive of indigenous materials and crafts as a starting point for the Council’s innovative strategy to preserve cultural heritage at architectural scale .

NAMA Director Reem BinKaram said: “Irthi has always been showcased at Milan Design Week, but this year will be very special. We are very proud to be able to share years of hard work, research, field work with like-minded partners from all over the world at this event and the fruit of the collaboration.From the very beginning, our goal has been to restore craft to its influence in society by combining craft with technology, and to further explore the infinite possibilities of craft application for greater development in the region. The prestigious 5VIE Design District at the 5VIE headquarters at 14 Cesare Correnti will be the inspiring backdrop for Irthi’s stunning presentation this year.

A key highlight of the Council’s participation in Milan Design Week 2023 is the Safeefah Majlis installation, accessible to participants of the event at ALCOVA, Via Marco Aurelio 21, 20127, 11am-7pm, April 17-23. Offering visitors an unprecedented opportunity to map and explain in detail the indigenous materials, crafts, culture and resources of the UAE, this parliament is the result of a year-long research collaboration between ICCC and Atelier LUMA – a project LUMA Arles .

As Irthi continues to break new ground in design and craftsmanship, their presence at Milan Design Week is a testament to their unwavering commitment to promoting the UAE’s rich cultural heritage.
