WORLD NEWS | EAM concludes mission to Uganda and Mozambique, signs projects

New Delhi [India]China News Service, April 15th, Foreign Minister Su Jiesheng paid official visits to the Republic of Uganda and the Republic of Mozambique from April 10 to 15.

EAM visited Uganda from 10-12 April 2023. In Kampala, EAM convened President Yoweri Museveni for a comprehensive discussion with Ugandan Foreign Minister General Jeje Odongo.

Together with Uganda’s Minister of Water and Environment, EAM officially launched the project, funded by EXIM Bank, which will provide drinking water to 500,000 people in 20 districts in Uganda.

He also met the 25-member Parliamentary Forum on Indian Affairs to exchange views on parliamentary cooperation and India-Uganda development partnership.

EAM inaugurated the first overseas campus of the National Forensic Science University (NFSU) in Jinja, Uganda, at a landmark event attended by Uganda’s Deputy Prime Minister Lukia Nakadama, Defense Minister Vincent Ssempijja and Foreign Minister Jeje Odongo. Classes will begin immediately on campus, currently located in the Transportation Building.

EAM also signed a Memorandum of Understanding between the Government of India and the Government of Uganda to establish a permanent NFSU campus in Jinja.

While in Jinja, he also visited a bust of Mahatma Gandhi. The site marks where the ashes of Mahatma Gandhi were dipped into the Nile in 1948.

EAM also interacted with the Indian community in Uganda and spoke at the Indian Business Forum attended by Minister of Trade, Industry and Cooperation Mwebesa Francis.

EAM has also officially launched a project funded by the Indian community in Uganda to restore Tulsi Ghat in Varanasi.

EAM also visited the Swaminarayan Temple in Kampala.

EAM met with Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Demeke Mekonnen in his office while on his way through Ethiopia. Bilateral, regional and multilateral issues were discussed, including those related to the United Nations.

EAM visited Mozambique from 13 to 15 April 2023. This is the first visit by an Indian foreign minister to Mozambique since 2010.

During his visit, he called on President Felipe Jacinto Nyusi, co-chaired the 5th joint committee meeting with Mozambique Foreign Minister Veronica Macamo Deljovo, and met with the Minister of Transport of the Mozambican government and the Minister of Health.

The meetings covered a wide range of topics, including bilateral, regional and international issues. Issues related to cooperation with multilateral forums, including the United Nations, were also discussed.

During the visit, EAM traveled with the Minister of Transport and Communications on a train procured by Mozambique under a Line of Credit (LoC) funded by India. The railway infrastructure will enhance the existing facilities in Mozambique and provide convenient transportation for the people.

He also inaugurated the actual inauguration of a bridge over the Buzi River as part of a 132-kilometer road being built by the Indian regional government.

Accompanied by the Minister of Health of Mozambique, EAM visited a pharmaceutical company built with technology transfer from India for the filling and finishing of vaccines and the manufacture of various medicines.

EAM also interacted with the vibrant Indian community living in Maputo. During his visit, he also prayed at the Shiva Temple in Maputo and the 110-year-old Rama Temple in Salamanga, about 80 kilometers from the capital.

The visit provided an opportunity for high-level interaction with these countries and further cemented the deep friendship between India and these countries. (Arnie)
