TEL AVIV, April 15 (AP) — Demonstrations in Israel against the government’s plans to reform the judiciary continued Saturday despite Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s decision to suspend controversial proposals.

Tens of thousands of people took part in the main protest in central Tel Aviv, while smaller demonstrations took place across the country.

Organizers of the protests have been holding weekly protests for more than three months, aiming to maintain momentum and increase pressure on Netanyahu and his government until the proposed reforms are scrapped.

Capitulating to mass protests, Netanyahu suspended reform plans in March, saying he wanted to “avoid a civil war”.

The plan would give Netanyahu, who is on trial on corruption charges, and his allies in Israel’s most hardline government, the final say in the appointment of state judges. It would also give the parliament, controlled by his allies, the power to overturn Supreme Court rulings and limit the court’s ability to review laws.

Opponents say it concentrates power in the hands of Netanyahu and his allies in parliament, undermining the system of checks and balances. They also said Netanyahu had a conflict of interest during his trial. (Associated Press)
