But David Stassen, who will run the eight-episode series, said there wasn’t a single conversation where someone said, “We shouldn’t be doing this.”

“Everybody comes up with the best idea, and we just go for it,” Stassen said Saturday during a “Contenders” televised panel in Hollywood. “Hopefully the best will rise to the top.”
In fact, there was one skit that didn’t make it into the final cut. Ike Barinholtz – who joined the panel on Saturday with Stassen and star Wanda Sykes – said they wanted to show a couple having sex while Pompeii was erupting, but they’d already done something on the Kama Sutra and had “lots of sex sketches. “

The series is the sequel to Mel Brooks’ groundbreaking 1981 film World History, Part I. Brooks also produced a series starring Nick Kroll, Barinholtz and Sykes.
“We just followed the mold of the movie,” Barinholtz explained of the series’ structure. “We just scaled it up with 20 to 30 minute stories. … There was a lot of shuffling in post, how to put it all together. The original plan was to do the four stories with Ike, Wanda and Nick, Random sketches everywhere.”
Comedians also have to come up with their own ideas. For example, Sykes wanted to play Shirley Chisholm. They ended up writing something that made the long-serving Congresswoman appear on a throwback ’70s sitcom.

“The world is heavy and there’s a lot of shit going on,” Barinholtz told the crowd. “It’s a show you can actually unplug and watch. Sometimes it’s good to be silly. It’s good to watch some stupid shit. I think we’ve done our best to give you some stupid stuff.”
