At least 20 people died in Mexico City subway collapse

According to local officials, at least 23 people died in Mexico City after the elevated train line collapsed on Monday night.

At around 10:22 p.m. local time, an overpass collapsed and the subway train of Line 12 fell to the ground.

Mayor Claudia Sheinbaum said at a press conference that at least 70 people have been taken to the hospital and 7 of them are undergoing surgery. According to the Mexican news agency Telediario.

The mayor said: “We provide support to all families who have lost their loved ones and all those who have been hospitalized. We will help them and provide them with all the support they want.”

According to the Associated Press, the subway system in Mexico City is one of the largest in the world and the second busiest in North America.

Line 12, also known as the Golden Line, is the recently opened line that runs through the city from southwest to southeast.
