UAE residents fight for glory in Abu Dhabi Challenge

Following an invitation from the Emirates Golf Federation (EGF) to win the UAE PGA Championship, local golf coach Louis Gaughan will join the Challenge Tour stars at next week’s Abu Dhabi Challenge (27-30 April) Fight alongside.

Ghosn, a PGA Pro at Dubai Hills Golf Club, shot a 71 and 69 at Jumeirah Golf Estate to beat Graham Forbes by one shot.

With the win, Gaughan was awarded one of 30 places in the Abu Dhabi Challenge, which has been allocated to the EGF to help create opportunities and provide pathways for UAE golfers and UAE residents.

The Scot will take on the likes of back-to-back hero Dubai Desert Classic winner Stephen Gallagher and 2023 lead to Mallorca leader Hugo Cussad at the Abu Dhabi Golf Club as the Challenge Tour begins five years on. First time back in the UAE.

“I’m looking forward to next week’s game and hopefully my boss will give me some time to practice a round,” Gowan said.

“I always try to play once or twice a week during the season, but I’m definitely going to practice a little more by next Thursday. I just saw the posted entries for the event and it’s nice to be able to compete with some of the guys who are also playing.” Friends, including Stephen Gallacher from Bathgate Golf Club, the club I grew up with.”

Joining Gaughan as UAE professional invitees are Mena Tour player Luke Joy, former Challenge Tour winner Dominic Foos, Els Club member Joshua Grenville-Wood and the UAE’s first professional golfer, Ahmed Al Musharrekh.

“I was delighted to receive the invitation from EGF because it really felt like a home event to me,” said Foss, who has lived in the UAE for eight years.

“I have fond memories of finishing 11th at the HSBC Championships Abu Dhabi 2019 at Abu Dhabi Golf Club, so I can’t wait to get going next week.”

Luke Joy added: “I’m really looking forward to doing the Challenge Tour because I’ve never been on that track before. I’ve played a few times on the DP World Tour, so I guess it’s going to be just as much fun. The Challenge Tour is known for its Known for depth of field and quality of players; these guys are working hard on the DP World Tour and beyond so it will be good to compete against them and give my best. For the region, the local pros and the UAE It’s been fantastic for the Golf Federation and I’m very grateful to them for giving me this opportunity.

“I really hope that someone like (leading UAE amateur) Ahmad Skaik can move on and get some really good experience, but ultimately try to qualify and move up the leaderboard as much as possible.”

The Abu Dhabi Challenge will be held at Saadiyat Beach Golf Club ahead of the UAE Challenge (May 4-7).

The two events are part of a long-term partnership between the European Tour Group and the EGF, which aims to develop golf in the UAE for at least the next decade.

Golf fans in the Middle East are encouraged to attend both events in support of Skaik and the many homegrown UAE players.
