Taiwan’s Ministry of National Defense hopes to obtain more cruise missiles and warships because it resists threats from Beijing almost every day.

Taiwan has proposed to spend an additional NT$240 billion (US$8.69 billion) on national defense in the next five years, including new missiles, and warned that it urgently needs to upgrade its weapons in the face of a “serious threat” from China. its.

Taiwan’s President Tsai Ing-wen, who first took office in 2016, prioritized military modernization and increased defense spending.

In addition to the 471.7 billion Taiwan dollars ($17 billion) military expenditures planned for the annual plan starting in January, additional funds need to be approved by Parliament. The ruling party of Tsai Ing-wen is in the majority and should be passed smoothly.

Taiwan’s Ministry of National Defense said in a statement on Thursday: “The CCP continues to invest heavily in its defense budget, its military strength is growing rapidly, and it frequently dispatches aircraft and ships to invade and harass our oceans and airspace.” The weekly cabinet meeting.

“Faced with severe threats from the enemy, the national army is actively carrying out army building and preparations, and it is urgent to obtain mature and rapid mass-produced weapons and equipment in a short period of time.”

The ministry added that Taiwan’s goal is to use the money to purchase equipment including cruise missiles and warships.

Taiwan has been testing new long-range missiles on its southern and eastern coasts. Although no details were provided, diplomats and experts said that they are likely to hit China’s targets far away.

“Carrier Killer”

The extra cash may be welcomed by Washington, which has been pushing Taiwan to modernize its military and make it more flexible.

Taiwan has put into use a new type of highly agile stealth warship, which Taiwan calls the “carrier killer” because of its missile supplement, and is developing its own submarine.

When this announcement was made, Taiwan was conducting its annual Hanguang military exercise to simulate a defense against China’s offensive.

On Wednesday, a Taiwanese fighter jet landed on a temporary runway on a section of the highway. If the Chinese Air Force base is attacked, the runway can be put into use.

On Wednesday, during a military exercise, Chinese aircraft flew into Taiwan’s air defense zone again.

The Taiwan Air Force is stepping up to intercept Chinese aircraft in air defense zones on the island almost every day, most of which are close to the disputed Taiwan-controlled Platas Islands in the northern part of the South China Sea.
