About Mark Patrick and the Alabama Symphony
Whether you are new to classical music or a regular, alabama symphony orchestra (ASO) has a show for you. Founded in 1921, the organization has continued to operate except for a brief closure in the 1990s. From traditional orchestral performances to classic renditions of famous pop albums, ASO’s talented musicians deliver memorable performances.
Much of ASO’s annual planning is coordinated by the organization’s executive director, Mark Patrick. Mark was appointed Executive Director in 2021 but started working with the organization in 2004. He has held various positions within the organization over the years, including Stage Manager, General Manager, Director of Operations and currently Executive Director.

During his twenty years at the ASO, Mark has been in the unique position to have seen the development of Birmingham’s Upper Town entertainment precinct.
“When I first joined ASO, Uptown looked very different than it does today. Now, the area has grown to include multiple hotels, multiple event venues, and a variety of restaurants and bars that have been added in recent years. It’s completely different scenery.”

For those of us who are no strangers to Birmingham, it’s easy to take the Uptown entertainment district for granted.However, there are always things to do in uptown— Includes dining options at Eugene’s Hot Chicken and Uptown Cantina, and entertainment at Uptown Jazz Lounge and TopGolf.
“In my experience, it’s very important for a city like Birmingham to have an area where people can come together before and after big events like concerts. It’s a multi-purpose area with the newly refurbished Legacy Arena, City Walk, and of course the new Protective Stadium. One of the great things about the BJCC complex is that it has multiple venues that can handle productions of any size. Spaces like this allow visitors to grab a bite to eat while they wait for the traffic to ease, or let them An opportunity to walk through downtown and see what it has to offer.”
