His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, commented on the UAE Mars mission ( EMM) scientists express their appreciation to Deimos.
On Monday, Sheikh Mohammed tweeted, “In a new global precedent…the UAE Mars exploration project, the ‘Hope Probe’, came 100km from the Martian moon Deimos…and captured the Sharpest image ever obtained of this satellite…theory tells us that this moon is an outer asteroid captured within the orbit of Mars…”
The new discovery reveals for the first time a never-before-studied region of Deimos’ far side. The most recent flyby saw Hope pass about 100 kilometers from Deimos.
So far, close observations of Deimos point to a planetary origin, rather than reflecting the composition of D-type asteroids as previously assumed.
Sheikh Mohammad’s tweet further stated, “The Hope Probe disproves this theory to prove with its equipment and team that this moon is primarily a part of Mars and separated from Mars millions of years ago… like Like Earth’s moon.. It’s part of it and separate from it. Proud of our young scientists. Proud of our science. Proud of our contribution to the advancement of human knowledge.”
