The European-Mediterranean Seismological Center (EMSC) earlier put the quake at magnitude 6.9.

The country’s meteorological service added that the quake was at a depth of 84 kilometers (52.2 miles), triggering a preliminary tsunami warning. The agency asked local authorities to immediately direct residents in affected areas to stay away from the coast.

Abdul Muhari, spokesman for Indonesia’s disaster mitigation agency, said authorities were collecting data from the islands on Sumatra’s west coast that were closest to the epicenter.

In Padang, Abdul said the quake was felt so strongly in Padang, the capital of West Sumatra province, that some people had left the beach.

“Although the earthquake here is very strong, there is no visible damage yet,” he said.

Akmal, an official in the Mentawai archipelago near Sumatra, told TvOne that locals are self-evacuating and heading to higher ground, but no casualties have been reported yet.

Indonesia, which suffers regularly from earthquakes, straddles the so-called Pacific Ring of Fire, a seismically active zone where different plates of the Earth’s crust meet.
