Joe Russo points out that Gen Z has ecstatically embraced the potential of AI, and, interestingly, I’m not sure he’s 100% here. My 20 year old nephew is an avid gamer, but he still enjoys chilling out and watching movies/tv with his buddies. He rarely went to the theater, but he did. Once Russo’s predicted future arrives, will he disappear down the AI rabbit hole? Maybe. But I don’t think it’s happening now.
I’m 49 years old, which makes me a Methuselah in technology. I’m not a Luddite, but I’m a human being and I understand what’s being lost here. The joy of creation is unparalleled. I’ll never forget the teenage euphoria I had when I finished the first draft of my screenplay. I get excited every time I turn in an article that looks like you are reading it.
I’m reminded of the scene in Robert Redford’s “Quiz Show” with Paul Scofield’s Mark Van Doren with his son Charles who is about to finish his book (Ralph Fiennes) shares a piece of cake that he considers a celebration. He understood the elation, but Charles showed frustration. “Do you have any idea?”
Mark will soon learn that Charles has fallen. His son used his reputation as a public intellectual to sell lies to the American public. “Quiz show” is about smart, relatively principled people participating in their own destruction to perpetuate what appears to be a white lie. Now, there are millions of smart people using ChatGPT because they feel it’s a harmless indulgence.
