Review: Russell Abu Dhabi

Dubai’s popular bakery elevates mall dining on Yas Island…

The story of La Serre begins in Dubai, and for a decade this French restaurant has been the city’s go-to place for dining. While La Serre is no longer there, it landed in the capital as a lighter iteration of its original counterpart, positioned as a bistro and bakery.

La Serre is adjacent to the mall’s main entrance, which means it benefits from a beautiful open-air terrace lined with cream planters emblazoned with the restaurant’s name, as well as elaborate wooden French carriages guarding the entrance. Guests can opt for a table on the terrace, which features a pretty dripping fountain in the center, or indoors, where gleaming chandeliers, ruby-red furniture and black-and-white photographs add an authentic French touch.

An extensive menu starts with a wide selection Pastries and Pans, all freshly baked and neatly displayed in glass cabinets in the restaurant. Then there’s eggs in nearly a dozen ways, all-day breakfast and lunch and dinner menus more reminiscent of the French fare served at the late Russell restaurant in Dubai. Torn between the all day breakfast and the à la carte menu, we opted to go off-piste and order options from each menu.

Judging by the choice of eggs, the oeufs Brouillés à la truffle noir (Dhs115) served on a silver plate, canary yellow eggs scrambled with fresh cream, was a little runny than we would have liked, but we left it It comes down to personal preference. The amount of fresh black truffle shavings can only be described as generous, while crunchy brioche soldiers add an unexpected sweetness. Next, we share two appetizers: classic French snails (Dhs105) and crevettes grillées (grilled prawns, Dhs145). A simple seasoning of grilled prawns cooked in oil with garlic, rosemary and a dash of chili let us wipe up every drop left on the plate with sourdough bread, unfortunately the sourdough bread was baked in the shade and didn’t burn coke. We smelled the garlic sauce before the snails were served, but it didn’t overwhelm it, and the rich anchovy butter added it to the next level.

Our final course took us back to breakfast because it didn’t feel right not to eat La Serre’s famous pain perdu (French toast, Dh60). We can confidently say that it is now one of the best hotels in Abu Dhabi. Thanks to the caramelized icing, rich red fruit compote and light vanilla creme add balance to this dish of pure indulgence, fluffy on the inside and crunchy on the outside.

judgment: Chic Paris, well worth trading your shopping therapy for a long, leisurely lunch.
