The Emirates Water and Electricity Company (EWEC) has achieved remarkable success in increasing clean, sustainable energy supply from 60% to 80% in Abu Dhabi and the northern UAE. At the end of last year, EWEC delivered 8.6 GW of solar and nuclear power.
This success is attributable to EWEC’s rapidly expanding portfolio of low-carbon and renewable energy-intensive projects that are transforming the UAE’s energy landscape.
The UAE’s energy transition must not only achieve net-zero emissions by 2050, but also achieve a resilient, diverse energy mix that can meet future demand.
The combination of increased industrial activity and population growth is expected to push the UAE’s total peak electricity demand up to 30% between 2022 and 2029.
Easa Alzarooni is EWEC’s Executive Director of Systems Operations. “EWEC is committed to world-leading major strategic energy projects to ensure safe and reliable supplies of sustainable electricity and water,” he explained. In addition to creating a sustainable future for Abu Dhabi and the UAE, EWEC is also Setting an example of how to quickly achieve low-carbon intensive hydropower production.
Noor Abu Dhabi is the largest single-site solar power plant in the world. It already produces enough renewable electricity for 90,000 people.
When fully operational, Al Dhafra Solar will be the largest solar power plant in the world. It can power up to 160,000 homes and reduce Abu Dhabi’s carbon dioxide emissions by more than 2.4 million tons per year. This is equivalent to taking more than 470,000 cars off the road.
“EWEC not only ensures security of supply, but also changes the sustainability of the generation mix and system operations.” “Our strategic actions will reduce our CO2 emissions from 40 million tons in 2020 to just 20 million tons in 2025 . 50% reduction,” Alzarooni said.
EWEC expects CO2 emissions from its electricity production to fall from 0.33 kg/kWh in 2019 to a projected 0.19 kg/kWh by 2029. Water production emission intensity is projected to decline from 11.5 kg/m3 to an estimated 1.4 kg/m3 over the same time period.
EWEC leads Abu Dhabi’s transition to low carbon intensive hydropower production. EWEC’s ability to meet 80% of its total electricity demand with renewable and clean energy on the eve of the Year of Sustainable Development and COP28 is a testament to its commitment to realizing the UAE’s wise leadership’s vision for a sustainable future.
