Experts at the Global Education and Training Exhibition (GETEX) have revealed that technology-related courses are the most popular among students, but there has also been an increase in demand for certain humanities courses.

According to some experts, courses such as visual design and international studies are gaining popularity due to increased employment opportunities in these fields.

The Khaleej Times lists the top 8 degree programs most likely to give students an edge in the job market upon graduation:

With technology and artificial intelligence increasingly the way forward, many students choose a computer science degree. The UAE’s drive to advance technology through initiatives such as the National Coders Program and the Million Arab Coders has helped drive exponential growth in demand for the sector.

“The BA in Computer Science allows students to enter a number of different technology-related fields, including artificial intelligence and web development,” said Mohamed Sohail, admissions coordinator at the University of West London.

At Amity University in Dubai, the Bachelor of Science – Forensic Science degree is one of the most popular degrees. This field of study relies on natural sciences such as chemistry and biology and combines them with the latest technology to help authorities solve crimes.

“This is a professional degree that leads students to careers with respected agencies such as the Dubai Police, as our graduates go on to become crime scene investigators and forensic analysts,” said Brendan Vyner, director of business development and student recruitment at the university.

The country’s push to increase the role of Emiratis in the workplace has led to the growing popularity of humanities programs such as international studies among Emirati nationals.

“International Studies gives students an insight into political science and the changing dynamics of the world,” said Doa Qutaifan, Admissions Officer, American University of Sharjah (AUS). “The degree helps students find employment in government and national service.”

The increasing opportunities available in the field of cybersecurity attract many students to the field. As the world becomes more digitized, the number of attacks on networked systems has also increased.

Some international figures show that there is an acute shortage of trained cybersecurity professionals to meet demand in the field.

“The Bachelor of Science in Cyber Security is a very popular course and remains highly sought after,” says Mohammed Suhail, University of West London

Apps and websites have become the identities of businesses, and everything becomes available at the tap of a button on your phone, creating a demand for designers and visual communication professionals.

“You need someone to design the online services, apps and everything that people use,” says AUS’s Doa Qutaifan. “That’s why degrees in visual communication and multimedia design have become very popular.”

6. Mechanical and electrical engineering

At the University of Wollongong in Dubai, Mechatronic Engineering courses are in high demand by students.

“It’s no surprise that mechatronics is a popular choice within the engineering discipline, as it offers a unique skill set in mechanical, electrical and computer engineering,” says Michael Eberle, Head of Marketing at the University of Wollongong in Dubai.

“This multidisciplinary approach provides students with a diverse skill set, making them highly employable in a wide range of industries. In addition, the increasing importance of automation and robotics means that mechatronics graduates are in high demand and can look forward to promising career prospects.”

7. BBA – Bachelor of Business Administration

Despite new trends, business degrees are still very popular. The Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) remains one of the most popular programs as it opens doors to various other fields.

“The BBA degree is very popular with us,” says Brendan Vyner of Amity University.

“A locally, regionally and federally accredited business degree, combined with hands-on experience and strong links with industry, ensures our BBA degree is one of our University’s top degrees”

Since the beginning of the Covid pandemic, the demand for healthcare workers has continued unabated. The 6-year Doctor of Medicine (MD) program is the most popular and popular program at Gulf Medical University.

“GMU also runs a Graduate Entry MD program for qualified candidates who have completed a Bachelor of Health-related Sciences,” said Professor Manda Venkatramana, Vice-Chancellor and Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, Gulf Medical University.

“Over 1,500 graduates of the program are now widely distributed across the globe, contributing to the knowledge and health economies in which they practice. We combine quality education and research with healthcare, providing students Opportunities for clinical and practical training—the hospital is also approved by the National Institutes of Health (NIHS) for residency training.”
