Emirates News Agency – COP28 UAE High Council reviews progress on strategic priorities, upcoming milestones

ABU DHABI, 29th April, 2023 (WAM) – His Excellency Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation and Chairman of the High Committee responsible for preparations for the 28th sessionday The UNFCCC Conference of the Parties (COP28 UAE) convenes members to discuss COP28’s vision, strategic priorities, preparations and key milestones ahead of the UAE-hosted climate summit.

During the meeting, HH Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed highlighted the UAE’s responsibility as host of COP28 and the country’s inclusive approach to the planning and organization of the conference throughout the visitor and delegate experience journey.

His Highness Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed said: “As host of COP28, the UAE has a responsibility to foster global consensus in this decade of action and guide an urgent, comprehensive and coordinated response to climate change COP28 will be an important meeting point for Heads of State, business leaders, civil society, science, youth and society as we consider where the world stands today on climate action and what must be done to meet commitments by 2030 according to Progress on the Paris Agreement.”

During the committee session, Dr. Sultan Al Jaber, COP28 President-elect and Vice-Chairman of the Higher Committee, provided key insights and outcomes from the COP28 President’s global listening and engagement tour, which included visits to India, China, Japan, Germany, France, the UK and the US .Recent key high-level meetings include the G7 Climate, Energy and Environment Ministerial Meeting in Sapporo, Japan, and the World Bank and IMF Spring Meetings in Washington, D.C.

Dr Sultan Al Jaber said: “Climate change is not just an environmental challenge, it is an economic issue. We need a way to reduce emissions while ensuring economic prosperity and energy access. COP28 will work with all stakeholders to accelerate With a business-led approach that balances climate action with sustainable economic and social development, we must act together to launch a transformative COP28 agenda that is pro-growth, pro-climate and leaves no one behind.

“As the COP28 presidency continues its journey of global listening and engagement, we call for greater climate cooperation to accelerate progress across core climate pillars. We have also consistently affirmed the need for a just and pragmatic energy transition, and supported international financial institutions and multilateral development Banking reforms to provide more affordable, accessible and usable climate finance, especially for countries in the Global South. We are committed to an inclusive COP28 agenda where everyone has the opportunity to have a voice and contribute to this contribute to the process.”

Shamma Al Mazrui, Minister of Community Development and COP28 Youth Climate Advocate, announced an overwhelmingly positive response to the International Youth Climate Representative Program launched by COP28 at the youth-led and community-wide ‘Road to COP28’ announced last month. event. The ‘Road to COP28’ event at Dubai Expo City brought together over 3,000 participants from the UAE community to raise climate awareness and inspire action for the Year of Sustainable Development. The COP28 UAE High Council includes ministers and government officials representing all areas of government, industry and sector to coordinate the nation’s efforts towards the climate summit.

During the meeting, committee members learned about the latest vision for COP28. The meeting also included an overview of logistics and protocols by Muhammad Al Junaibi, Chairman of the Federal Protocols and Strategic Narrative Authority; Security and Operations, by Talal Belhoul, Director-General, National Security Department, Dubai Police; COP28 Site Traffic Plan presented by Director Mattar Al Tayer.
