The UAE cricket team is a happy and confident bunch who seem to be feeding each other, as has been evident over the past few months. The results are starting to show. In picturesque Kathmandu on Sunday, rain permitting, the UAE hoped to reach the top, so to speak.

The UAE will renew their rivalry with Nepal in the ACC Super Cup final, while the Asian Cup berth will be hosted by Pakistan.

The winner will qualify for the tournament to be held in September and will be in the same group as heavyweights India and Pakistan.

The UAE beat neighboring Oman by two points in a rain-reduced semi-final at the Murpani Stadium in Kathmandu on Saturday.

Mubashshir Usmani, secretary-general of the UAE Cricket Council, traveled to Nepal to congratulate the team.

In a close game where fate swung like a pendulum and rain stopped the game, Oman needed 47 runs, 42 balls and four wickets.

When the downpour started, Oman was 190-6 in 43 overs, falling short of the DLS target of 193 in 43 overs.

The other semi-final between Nepal and Kuwait was eliminated by the hosts.

Nepal outscored 281-9 in 42 overs as rain forced a reduction to 42 overs.

Kuwait led 37-6 in 8.3 overs when the rain stopped, with Nepal walker Karan KC taking five wickets for just 10 runs in 4.3 overs.

Nepal ended the group stage with more points than Kuwait and thus booked their place in the final.

Oman captain Zeeshan Maqsood won the toss and allowed the UAE to bat, a decision that was confirmed by the Oman bowlers who limited the UAE to 236 in 49.2 overs with a disciplined performance.

Spinner Maqsood was brilliant, taking four for 32, while pacer Bilal Khan continued his hot form with four for 44, including two for one, sending back Asif Khan and the experienced Rohan Mustafa.

Mulpani pitches largely helped the slower bowlers, with Oman’s off-spin bowler Jay Odedra keeping a tight rein on the run rate in the mid-innings as he produced a miserable spell of 0/19 in eight overs, while Ayaan Khan took two crucial wickets.

Muhammad Waseem was the UAE’s top runner with 48 off just 31 balls, while Rameez Shahzad (46), Asif Khan (34) and Basil Hameed (34) also made notable contributions.

> UAE beat Oman by 2 points (DLS approach)

> United Arab Emirates: 236 points 49.2 points (Muhammad Waseem 48, Rameez Shahzad 46, Basil Hameed 34, Asif Khan 34; Zeeshan Maqsood 4-32, Bilal Khan 4-44, Ayaan Khan 2-54)

> Oman: 43 rounds 190-6 (DLS goals 193, 43 runs) (Kashyap Prajapati 49, Jatinder Singh 42, Zeeshan Maqsood 40, Mohammad Nadeem 24 nos; Karthik Meiyappan 3-42, Basil Hameed 2-20)
