The senior US general apologized and stated that those killed in Afghanistan are “unlikely” related to ISKP.
General Frank MacKenzie, commander of the US Central Command, admitted that a U.S. drone attack in Kabul at the end of August killed 10 civilians.
MacKenzie said on Friday that the US military initially claimed that the victims were “unlikely” related to the Islamic State ISKP (ISIS-K) in Khorasan Province.
Mackenzie said: “After a thorough review of the findings and analysis of support from inter-agency partners, I am now convinced that as many as 10 civilians, including as many as 7 children, were unfortunately killed in that attack.”
The American general expressed his “deep condolences” to the families of the victims, and emphasized that the airstrike was “deeply believe” that it could prevent an imminent attack on the airport where the U.S. evacuated personnel were located.
“This is a mistake, and I sincerely apologize,” MacKenzie said. “As a combat commander, I am fully responsible for this strike and this tragic result.”
The August 29 strike took place a few days after a suicide bomb attack near the airport claimed by ISKP. The explosion killed at least 175 people, including 13 American soldiers.
