Geoffrey Hinton, known as the “godfather of artificial intelligence”, has quit Google and has issued dire warnings about the dangers posed by the technology.

Geoffrey Hinton worked at Google for over a decade, developing techniques that paved the way for current AI systems such as ChatGPT. But he has decided to quit the company so he can sound the alarm about the dangers of artificial intelligence.

Now he tells the New York Times that he regrets his contributions to the field. “I comfort myself with the usual excuse: If I don’t do it, someone else will,” he said.

In the short term, he fears the technology will mean people will “no longer be able to know what’s real” because of the deluge of fake images, videos and text, he said.

But in the future, artificial intelligence systems may eventually learn unexpectedly dangerous behaviors, and such systems could eventually power killer robots. He also warned that the technology could cause harmful disruption to the labor market.

“This idea that things can actually become smarter than humans — a few people believed it,” he said. “But most people think it’s far away. I think it’s far away. I think it’s 30 to 50 years or more. Obviously, I don’t think so anymore.”

He warned that regulation is needed to ensure that companies such as Google and Microsoft are not caught in dangerous competition. He said the companies may have been developing dangerous systems in secret.

“I don’t think they should scale up until they understand whether they can control it,” he said.
