KATHMANDU, May 3 (PTI) — Injured Indian climber Anurag Maloo underwent a successful tracheotomy on Wednesday and his condition is improving, said his brother, who was rescued by rescuers on Mount Annapurna in Nepal. It was found alive almost two weeks later.

Anurag, 34, a resident of Kishangarh in Rajasthan state, disappeared after falling from a height of around 6,000 meters during his descent from Camp 3 in mid-April. Annapurna is the tenth highest peak in the world.

On April 20, after a three-day search by a team of rescuers, he was found alive in a deep fissure at an altitude of about 5,800 meters. He was rushed to Manipal Hospital in Pokhara before being airlifted to Kathmandu for further treatment.

“Anurag underwent a successful tracheotomy,” his brother Ashish Maloo told PTI.

A tracheostomy is an opening in the front of the neck so that a tube can be inserted into the windpipe (trachea) to help the patient breathe. Tubes can be connected to an oxygen supply and ventilator if necessary.

“We expect him to be off the ventilator in the next 3-4 days,” Ashish said, adding that Anurag was awake, with his eyes open and following the doctor’s instructions.

Anurag is currently being treated in the intensive care unit of Medicity Hospital in Lalitpur, near Kathmandu.

Anurag also moved slightly, Ashish said.

His mission is to climb all 14 of the 8,000-meter-plus mountains and the seven highest points on all seven continents to raise awareness and drive action towards the United Nations’ global goals.

He was awarded REX Karam – Veer Chakra and became India 2041 Antarctic Youth Ambassador.
