The central government has denied permission for Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan to attend a global investor conference in Abu Dhabi.
A senior official from the Chief Minister’s Office (CMO) confirmed on Wednesday that the government had received a letter from the center denying permission for Mr Vijayan and his cabinet colleagues to travel to the country for the event.
Tourism Minister PA Mohamed Riyas and Industry Minister P. Rajeeve were part of the team that showcased Kerala’s investment-friendly environment and its pitch to transform the state into a knowledge-based economy.
The official said he could not comment on whether Vijayan had ditched the trip. Nonetheless, the central government allowed the Chief Secretary for Administration and other top officials to attend the event. The state government will weigh the situation on Thursday and seek further clarification from central.
The Kerala state government is one of the gold sponsors of the event, with a reported investment of close to Rs 1 crore, making the state an international platform to showcase its prowess to the global business community, officials said.
Event organizers extended similar invitations to several other provincial governments in the country. It was not immediately clear whether the center had denied permission for other chief ministers to attend the Abu Dhabi event.
The central government has not released in the public domain the reasons for banning Mr Vijayan and his cabinet colleagues from the event.
