The US State Department said on Friday that Washington hopes to discuss the dispute with France over the suspension of the submarine contract at the UN General Assembly next week.

State Department spokesperson Ned Price issued a statement on Twitter, saying: “We hope to continue discussing this issue at the top in the next few days, including next week on #UNGA.”

“We have been in close contact with our French allies. We understand their positions,” Price said. “France is an important partner and our oldest ally, and we value our relationship very much.”
US President Joe Biden announced on Wednesday the establishment of a tripartite security alliance between Australia, the United States and the United Kingdom to extend US nuclear submarine technology, cyber defense, applied artificial intelligence and subsea capabilities to Australia.
It is widely believed that the agreement aims to counter the rise of China.
The move angered France, which lost a contract to supply conventional submarines to Australia, which was valued at 50 billion Australian dollars (31 billion euros, 36.5 billion US dollars) when it was signed in 2016.
