Restaurant review: José by Pizarro Abu Dhabi Harriet Shephard embarks on an immersive journey through Spain’s rich culinary culture in the capital
Abu Dhabi dazzles us with its world-renowned dining scene, with incredible places to dine, relax and celebrate.
Yet while award-winning cookbooks, stunning beachside terraces and lavish interiors abound, the UAE capital has long been lacking a fun, informal and genuinely authentic tapas bar.
Thankfully, José of Pizarro Abu Dhabi is here to fill the city’s croquette-sized void.
Renowned Spanish chef José Pizarro, known in the UK as the “Godfather of Spanish cooking”, already owns several well-known restaurants in London and an idyllic hotel on the Andalusian coast.
Marking his first foray into the Middle East, a new addition to Conrad Abu Dhabi at Etihad Towers opened in March. A cozy 40-seater restaurant inspired by Seville’s lively, upmarket tapas bars, a renowned venue that exudes a fresh, laid-back and friendly ambience.
The front of this lively restaurant is filled with standing tables for those looking to socialize and mingle while dining, while the rear area features wide booths, comfortable tables and a handsome, well-stocked bar.
Hailing from the beautiful old city of Cáceres in the west of Spain, José brings all the bold colours, flavors and traditions of his hometown to life in his enticing classic and modern tapas.
Live music from the guitarist and black-and-white family photos of Pizarro set the stage for our chow-down opening pica-pica (snack) selection. Traditional Spanish tortillas served with a scoop of silky caviar, spicy shrimp cakes, chicken croquettes, spinach and Manchego croquettes are simply amazing.
More simple and timeless recipes can be found in the tapeo (small plates) section. The tuna and potato salad was made with beautifully fresh high quality fish, it was so creamy and delicious, we tore down the spicy beef meatballs in seconds.
Entrees are served in large sharing-style portions. Featuring huge deep-sea prawns (one of the most popular shellfish in all of Spain), the eye-catching prawns and creamy rice are a highlight, while free-range chicken paella and lamb shanks offer even more What a tempting choice. Saving room for a rich and decadent pot of rich dark chocolate pudding is another must. Based on José’s grandmother’s original recipe, finished with a pinch of sea salt, a drizzle of extra-virgin olive oil and a slice of crunchy sourdough for the perfect balance of sweet and savory.
Currently working in all his branches, the friendly, lively and charming José is often present on the restaurant floor to welcome every guest and make sure everyone feels at home.
José by Pizarro offers a relaxed, upbeat and cultured culinary experience unlike any other in Abu Dhabi, providing an unforgettable setting for a lively date night or a special evening with friends.
