Paris [France]5 May (ANI/WAM): In a new report titled “In Defense of Creativity,” the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) says the international community must defend itself against those involved in armed conflict, political instability and Natural Disaster Artists Deliver Greater Conservation Voices, published Thursday.
Emergencies often exacerbate the vulnerability already experienced by those working in the arts, as they face multiple threats such as online and offline harassment, loss of income, legal prosecution, violence, censorship and silence.
Creatives also often lack a minimum safety net due to their precarious legal status, the report said.
In 2021, a record 39 artists will be killed in 12 countries and 119 artists will be imprisoned in 24 countries, UNESCO said, citing figures from Freemuse, an independent international NGO that advocates for freedom of artistic expression and cultural diversity.
In addition, more than 1,200 violations of artistic freedom were recorded worldwide that year.
UNESCO oversees the Convention on the Diversity of Cultural Expressions, which entered into force in 2007.
Although 152 countries have ratified the treaty, only 27 percent develop or support safe spaces for artists.
Slightly more than half (53%) of countries have independent institutions to receive complaints or monitor violations and restrictions of artistic freedom.
The UN agency also announced a new $1 million investment to fund projects supporting artistic freedom in more than 25 countries. Of these projects, 13 are government-led and others are run by NGOs. (ANI/WAM)
