The military stated that former President Alpha Kant, who was detained after the coup, will not be allowed to leave Guinea, ignoring regional pressure.
Guinea’s military leaders stated that they would not allow the deposed President Alfa Kant to seek exile because the regional mediator tried to apply pressure to ensure that he was in Sudden Earlier this month.
Friday’s statement was issued after the West African Regional Group, known as ECOWAS, met with Colonel Mamadi Dumbuya in Conakry.
“We will not succumb to any pressure,” the military leader said after the meeting. “Comte is and will remain in Guinea.”
ECOWAS President Nana Akufo-Addo, President of Ghana, and President Alassane Ouattara of Ivory Coast, met with the coup leader and the head of the army’s special forces, Dumbuya, who had been detained since his overthrow Comte was in power on September 5th for more than 10 years.
Akufo-Addo said that the delegation had “very frank and brotherly discussions” with Doumbouya and colleagues.
“I think ECOWAS and Guinea have done a good job together,” he said, adding that they could also hold a fruitful meeting with Comte.
Group agrees Targeted sanctions On Thursday, Guinea’s military leaders failed to meet their demands. ECOWAS called for the immediate release of Comte and the swift transfer of power, and the holding of elections within six months.
The soldiers behind the coup stated that they are consulting with various public figures, groups and business leaders in the country to develop a transitional framework. They claimed that Comte was overthrown because of concerns about poverty and corruption, and because he was only allowed to serve his third term after the constitution was amended.
The sanctions passed include the freezing of financial assets and a travel ban on Guinea’s military leaders and their relatives.
Since last year, four coups have taken place in West and Central Africa. The political turmoil has exacerbated concerns about the regression of military rule in resource-rich but impoverished areas.
