Walking the red carpet at the Emmys and Oscars while listening to breaking news about celebrity accomplishments was a dream come true for Hiba Bary.

She was a busy broadcast journalism student at Cal State University, Fullerton before she landed a job as an associate producer for the “Entertainment Tonight” news division.

Bary ’19 (BA communications-journalism) was featured panelist during newsletter week,Depend on School of Media Industry professionals are invited to talk to students about their career experiences.

As associate producer, Barry reaches out to celebrity representatives, including managers and publicists, for confirmation and breaking news. She also attends “Entertainment Tonight” events such as movie premieres, press conferences and awards shows.

One haunting story Barry reported was the sudden death of American singer and rapper Aaron Carter. “Entertainment Tonight” finds unique angles to report and advance stories.

“I did some deep research on Aaron and found one of his best friends. I reached out to his friend and he agreed to come to our studio for a sit-down interview,” says Barry. “My pre-order became exclusive. We got a lot of attention from other sources and this article ranked high for us.”

Back at her alma mater, Barry advised students to “be a sponge” and keep absorbing the wisdom and skills of alumni like her.

In broadcast news, Barry said, employers look for candidates who are always on their toes, think outside the box, plan ahead and are adept at booking resources ahead of other news stations.

She assures students that mistakes and trials will help them grow as accomplished journalists.

From Broadcaster to Entertainment Producer

As a student at CSUF, Bary immersed himself in Entertainment Travel Club and in titan tv Shows such as TitanWeekly, The Reporter, TechOn, and OC News.

“I knew CSUF had a great reputation as a communications school, so I had no doubts about where I wanted to go to college,” Bary said. “I’m an avid visitor career center, where I review my resume and cover letter. “

Her broadcast journalism professor taught her to embrace constructive criticism, a key trait needed to thrive in this industry.

As a student, Barry was on E! News, NBCUniversalViacom and the Ryan Seacrest Foundation.

“I applied for 70 internships,” she laughs. “Networking is key because it really is about who you know in the industry. Intern as much as you can as a student.”

At a meeting in the Entertainment and Travel Club, Bary connected with a CSUF alumnus from “Entertainment Tonight” and applied to the company.

“I’ve always wanted to be in journalism because it’s rarely repetitive,” Barry said. “Everybody likes music, TV, movies, everybody has an opinion. We all consume it in some capacity.”
