NEW YORK (AP) — “Yellowstone,” the wildly popular western starring Kevin Costner, will wrap up this fall and be replaced almost immediately by a sequel. But like any good show, there are some mysteries.
The sequel, which remains untitled, will premiere in December on the Paramount cable network, which also airs “Yellowstone,” Paramount said Friday.
Behind Costner, who played Montana rancher John Dutton, series creator Taylor Sheridan launched a phenomenon. 12.1 million viewers tuned in on the opening night of the fifth season in November, more than any other scripted series last fall — a remarkable feat for a non-broadcast network show.
“We’ve been able to make a show that, while not popular at first, is made on its own terms,” Costner told The Associated Press last fall.
“Yellowstone” will air new episodes in November; how many were not announced Friday. The episodes have yet to be filmed, and it’s unclear if Costner will be involved, amid reports that he may want to exit the series.
Paramount would not comment that Friday, with a spokesperson saying only, “Kevin Costner is a huge part of Yellowstone, and we expect to be for a long time to come.”
David Glasser, chief executive of 101 Studios, which co-produced “Yellowstone” with MTV Entertainment, said the new series “will pick up where ‘Yellowstone’ left off in another epic story.” But the words “Yellowstone” will be part of the title — an important distinction since spinoffs like “1883” or “1923” aren’t.
Paramount has denied published reports that actor Matthew McConaughey has signed on to star in the sequel. But a spokesman said Friday that McConaughey “is an extraordinary talent with whom we would love to work.”
The sequel will also air on the Paramount+ streaming network after it debuts on the cable network.
This is a very important distinction for the company. “Yellowstone” airs on Comcast-owned NBC Universal’s Peacock service, meaning most of the revenue generated by the hit series goes elsewhere.
