Katie's ending

Zayed Al Kathiri quickly rose to fame in the Jiu-Jitsu world with his explosive fighting style and powerful kills.

Gulf Today, our reporter

History maker Zayed Al Kathiri will take to the field at Abu Dhabi’s Mubadala Arena this weekend, looking to claim another black belt gold to match the one he won in the UAE capital last November.

The 23-year-old, one of the UAE’s most promising jiu-jitsu stars, will be a favorite for the final leg of the Grand Slam World Tour in Abu Dhabi from Friday to Sunday.

At last year’s World Pro Abu Dhabi Championships in the UAE, Kathiri became the first Emirati black belt to win gold on such an arena when he defeated Brazilian Nathannael Fernandes in a heated final.

Kathiri quickly rose to fame in the Jiu-Jitsu world with his explosive fighting style combining powerful knockouts, lightning-quick submissions, and aggressive techniques. Winning numerous titles at national and international level, including multiple gold medals in several belt categories at the World Vet Championships in Abu Dhabi and various AJP Tour events.

As the final weekend of the Abu Dhabi Grand Slam looms, Kathiri – the No. 1 black belt pro in the 56kg division – is looking forward to showing his skills again – and fully expecting to add to his already impressive schedule. Adding another prestigious title to the results. “I trained extensively for the final round and I am confident I will win. I have gold medals in all belt colors and am ready to take on any challenge that comes my way. Winning gold with my black belt would be amazing.

“I believe I have the ability to excel in all the different positions and chapters of jiu-jitsu, including isolating, passing and playing guard. This flexibility allows me to adapt to different strategies and tactics in combat.”

Competing under the UAE flag, Kathiri’s win at last year’s World Pro Jiu-Jitsu Championships in Abu Dhabi provided inspiration for his preparations for his latest challenge.

“Fighting while representing UAE values is a source of great motivation for me,” he said. “I am very happy and proud to be the first Emirati black belt to win a medal at World Pro in Abu Dhabi.”

A full-time jiu-jitsu athlete, Kathiri is a role model for young Emiratis, dedicated to promoting the UAE’s national sport and inspiring others to pursue it.

“It takes hard work, dedication, resilience and sacrifice to succeed in the sport. There are no shortcuts,” he said. “You need support too, so I want to thank the coaches, teammates and fans who have helped me along the way. Without them, I wouldn’t be here.”

Those fans can eagerly look forward to what Katie will do this weekend. With his impressive record, talent and newfound experience, he’s sure to try to put on a solid show that cements his place as one of the sport’s top practitioners.

The Abu Dhabi Grand Slam Jiu-Jitsu World Tour is considered one of the most important events in the global Jiu-Jitsu calendar, offering prize money totaling $1,525,000 to the first place winner of the season.

After visiting Rio de Janeiro, Miami, Sydney and London, the Abu Dhabi Grand Slam rounds up the final leg of the season in the UAE capital.

Jointly organized by the UAE Jiu-Jitsu Federation (UAEJJF) and Abu Dhabi Jiu-Jitsu Pro (AJP), the event is open to male and female players from various clubs and academies around the world.

Among the most popular athletes, the 2021-2022 ranking leaders Lucas Protasio and Julia Alves have already confirmed their places in the event. In order to repeat their feat in 2022-2023 season, they will have to overcome other heavyweight batsmen who are interested in the title, such as Yuri Hendrex, Zayed

Alkatheeri, Alexa Yanes, Rose el Sharouni, Catriel Oliveira, Uanderson Ferreira, Thiago Macedo, Hiago George, Ingridd Alves, Leonardo Mario, Renato Cardoso and Yatan Bueno.
