Govt bans import of apples at Rs 50/kg; Iran, UAE may be hit

The source said the ban was made on the advice of the Ministry of Agriculture. The revision of the trade policy comes during the off-season for apples.
At the high end, Washington apples and Turkish apples have flooded the market in recent years. In the last fiscal year, apple imports were worth nearly $300 million, down about 24 percent from the previous year.
Official breakdown data for April-February shows that Turkey accounted for the largest share of imports ($72 million), followed by Chile ($38.6 million), Italy ($34 million) and Iran ($26 million). US apple imports fell 76% to $5 million.
