kabul [Afghanistan]May 9 (ANI): The United Nations has called on the Taliban to stop flogging and executions in Afghanistan, the Khaama Press reported.
Fiona Fraser, head of human rights for the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan, said in a statement that the Taliban’s practice of corporal punishment violated international law.

She urged Taliban leaders to stop all executions immediately.
“Physical punishment violates the Convention against Torture and must stop,” said Fiona Fraser, the agency’s human rights director. She also called for an immediate moratorium on executions, Khaama Press reported.
The Taliban-led Afghan foreign ministry responded that most Afghans follow Islamic rules and guidance and that Afghan laws are based on Islamic principles.
“If international human rights law conflicts with Islamic law, the government is obliged to abide by Islamic law,” the Taliban-led ministry said.
Meanwhile, a United Nations report released on Monday strongly criticized the Taliban for carrying out executions, flogging and stoning since taking control of Afghanistan. It urged Taliban leaders to immediately stop the practice.
According to the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA), 274 men, 58 women and two boys have been publicly flogged in Afghanistan over the past six months.
According to reports, the Taliban authorities executed an Afghan man convicted of murder in December 2022. This was the first public execution since he came to power in Afghanistan.
The victim’s father executed him with an assault rifle in the western province of Farah in front of hundreds of spectators including senior Taliban officials.
The Taliban have tightened restrictions on women, barring them from public places such as education, universities, parks and gyms.
The restrictions have sparked a global uproar, deepening the country’s isolation at a time when the country’s economy is in free fall, Khaama Press reported. (Arnie)
