Interview: A Conversation with D3 Executive Director Khadija Al Bastaki

The Dubai Design District (D3) is truly the center of Dubai’s emerging fashion and design industry.As one of the most dynamic emerging design hubs in the world, D3 has taken a number of initiatives to become a thriving art and design community that is constantly growing and innovating

Dedicated master-planned development near Dubai’s Business Bay is dedicated to the design community, where you’ll find everything from emerging designs to established luxury brands, regional design studios and more within the centre. With fashion and design events held throughout the year, the Dubai Design District has become a regional destination for anyone looking to get into the business of fashion and design.

BAZAAR interviewed Khadija Al Bastaki, one of the key figures driving the development of Dubai Design District, to learn about her influential role, the UAE’s design community and her vision for the future of D3.

Harper’s BAZAAR Arabia (HBA): How did you become Executive Director of Dubai Design District, can you tell us a little bit about your journey?

Khadija Al Bastaki (KAB): My journey with TECOM Group started at the end of 2015 when I became Director of Business Development for Dubai Media City, Dubai Studio City and Dubai Production City. It’s been a wonderful journey that led me to become Executive Director of D3 in 2019.

I joined D3 because I saw an exciting opportunity to grow the UAE design community and support creative businesses, entrepreneur and start-ups create jobs for this country.

HBA: How would you describe D3 to someone who has never been?

KAB: The Dubai Design District is a hub of creativity in the UAE and home to local and international brands including Dior, Burberry, Zaha Hadid Architects and Foster + Partners. We have an excellent portfolio of restaurants, office space, showroom and shops create a vibrant community for creative thinkers with basketball and volleyball courts, skate parks, an outdoor gym, climbing wall and an urban beach.

HBA: What has been the biggest change you have witnessed in the UAE’s art and design scene over the past decade?

KAB: The UAE fashion and art community has changed dramatically over the last decade, we have seen an increase in the number of up-and-coming artists and designers from the UAE and the MENA region, and D3 is instrumental in creating an ecosystem effect Cultivate talents and promote innovation and encourage collaboration among our business partners.

HBA: How do you see the industry developing over the next decade?

KAB: In the UAE, the creative industries will continue to grow and develop, with design contributing billions of dollars to the UAE economy, creating more jobs and making Dubai a diverse and exciting place to live and work. Careem and Souq are success stories in Dubai Internet City, I hope D3 will be the springboard Creative Industries in the UAE Enjoy similar global achievements.

HBA: What event are you most looking forward to in the D3 calendar?

KAB: I Love all our events equally because each one is unique. All these events— Dubai Design Week, fashion front in dubai or Sole DXB – bringing the creative community together, strengthening D3’s position as a strategic partner and enabler of that community’s success.

HBA: What do you think is the ultimate goal of D3?

KAB: As D3 continues to solidify its position as a leading hub for local, regional and global creativity, We will continue to support the design industry And promote local talents. D3 wants to create an ecosystem that helps our business partners thrive.
