Islamabad [Pakistan]May 9 (ANI): Islamabad High Court (IHC) Chief Justice Aamer Farooq on Tuesday reserved the sentence for the arrest of former prime minister and Pakistan Justice Instigation (PTI) chief Imran Khan, Geo News reported.

The IHC expressed displeasure at the removal of Imran Khan from the courthouse by law enforcement agencies at around 2.15pm.

Chief Justice Aamer Farooq said that if the head of the PTI was illegally arrested, “he will have to be released,” Dawn newspaper reported.

IHC CJ further said that the court is in the process of determining the legality of Imran Khan’s arrest, whether legal or illegal. “Which law allows authorities to arrest someone from the High Court?” reported ARY News.

IHC CJ reserved the judgment which will be announced at some time.

Earlier, the Islamabad High Court had summoned the head of the National Accountability Bureau and prosecutors following the former prime minister’s arrest.

Judge Farouk directed the government to immediately inform the court who was behind the arrest and the circumstances under which Imran was arrested.

Earlier in the day, the IHC had been notified of Imran’s arrest and had directed the Islamabad police chief, interior minister and another attorney general to appear in court within 15 minutes, Dawn reported.

The IHC CJ said he had shown “restraint” and warned that he would “summon” the prime minister if the Islamabad police chief did not appear in court.

“Come to court and tell us why Imran was arrested and under what circumstances,” Judge Farouk said.

“We told you to show up in 15 minutes, but you came in 45 minutes later,” the IHC CJ observed, expressing anger at the delay.

Imran Khan was arrested by the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) in the Al-Qadir Trust case.

The PTI chief was detained by Ranger officers acting under the mandate of the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) from the seat of the Islamabad High Court, where the former prime minister had sought bail in several cases against him.

According to the NAB notification, Khan’s arrest warrant was issued on May 1 by NAB chairman Lt Gen (retired) Nazir Ahmad Butt.

Inspector General (IG) Akbar Nasir said Imran was arrested in connection with a case in which the head of PTI and his wife received billions of rupees from a real estate firm to legalize the laundering of Rs 5,000 crore. It has been identified and returned to the UK for service to the country during the previous PTI government, Dawn reported.

Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah said Imran had not yet appeared in court despite receiving several notices. “The arrest was made by the National Accountability Office because it cost the state coffers,” he said, adding that Imran was not tortured.

Meanwhile, protests were reported in several cities across the country. Demonstrators burned tires and chanted slogans against the coalition government.

In addition, water cannons were also used against protesters gathered outside Imran Zaman’s park residence, Dawn newspaper reported.

Lahore police are on high alert. A statement issued by the Lahore Police said security had been stepped up across the city following the instructions of Lahore Deputy Inspector General (Operations) Saeed Ali Nasir Rizvi.

In Karachi, two lanes of Sharea Faisal were blocked after PTI MNA and MPA blocked the road. Demonstrations were also reported on the main University Road, near Old Sabzi Mandi, Banaras Chowk and Al-Asif Square.

Separately, the Sindh branch of PTI issued a protest call, asking supporters to gather outside Insaf House at 4pm.

Demonstrations also took place at Hashtnagri and GT Road, Bannu and Charsadda in Peshawar, Dawn newspaper reported. (Arnie)
