The WGA strike loomed over Hollywood and the creative world at large.but as i wrote last week, one question looms over all of this: artificial intelligence. AI represents an immediate, existential threat to writers and all creatives. So now is the time to make the fundamental choices that will determine the path forward for our industry — yes, forever.

The question is: as an industry, are we a human team or an AI team? This question is not alarmist, anti-tech or simplistic. It’s just our collective reality, thanks to the accelerating complexity of artificial intelligence in a world that unleashed ChatGPT less than six months ago.

I keep raising the red flag Since then, I’ve talked about AI in a weekly column. But I’m also trying to be sober and optimistic in all of this to point out the positive impact of AI — Examples of how artists are using AI and its immense power as a revolutionary new tool for their benefit. Contradictory? not at all. Different contexts lead to different conclusions.

Creators with cult followings are well positioned, such as musician Grimes, who Invite people A synthetic version of her voice was generated last week using the new tool Elf.tech. Those behind the scenes, like Hollywood screenwriters, are not. Where do we place humans in the equation drives all of this, and we can’t wait for the time to answer that question.

With that prologue in mind, here’s my three-act script outline that should guide every industry decision—including resolving the writers’ strike—along this exciting yet daunting journey through artificial intelligence.

first act

As an industry, we must choose whether we are teams of humans, and believe that human creativity is sacred—true originality and inspiration that AI alone cannot achieve. Human teams force us to resist the urge to cede the supremacy of our imagination to machine providence. No offense to the tech world I’ve spent my career in. But it is “artificial intelligence” after all, meaning that artificial intelligence provides artificial creativity.

As a society, we have been trained to feel insecure about our place in the world next to increasingly complex, productivity-first machines. Perhaps instead, we flip the script and celebrate the fact that the human mind fires in mysterious and often unpredictable ways. It’s human to make mistakes? And that humanity, that unrepeatable weirdness, is exactly what opens the door to new possibilities.

AI, on the other hand, is powered by predictive models that inevitably tend towards mediocrity in constant iterations of existing works. This approach may be useful in objective scientific endeavors such as the treatment of cancer, where AI-Assisted Research Dividends have been paid, but not so much in terms of breaking new ground in the subjective, often inexplicable world of art. For example, yes, I could have told the AI to write this article in my style. But it can’t accurately predict the exact word I might choose next. (In fact, I’ve changed them.) It’s all part of the craft, and it always has a place.

second act

If we choose to join Team Human, we must remain steadfast in our commitment to keeping humans at the center of the creative and entertainment world. If we don’t make choices now, AI will inevitably make choices.Geoffrey Hinton, dubbed the “godfather of AI,” just left Google It is to ring this alarm bell.

That doesn’t mean we reject AI or are paralyzed by fear.In fact, the recently introduced human art movementThe first principle (out of seven) is that “technology has long empowered humans to express, and artificial intelligence is no exception.” We are realists and pragmatists. We understand that the world we create is forever changed.

But we also believe that AI exists to augment our creative endeavors, not transcend them. AI expands the possibilities of an artist’s palette and canvas. AI is also democratizing art, just as synthesizers democratized music 40 years ago. Synthesizers empower humans with creative ideas, but no formal musical training to bring those ideas to life. Hence, 80s new wave. But there’s a reason we call these new “synthetic” sounding instruments “synthesizers.”

third act

If we accept that the threat of AI to the creative community is real, then we must firmly support this resolve. This means we have to define our incentive structures and game rules accordingly. Our legal and operational frameworks and guardrails must reflect this team human commitment.

The US Copyright Office has opted to embrace Team Human, at least for now. it recently reaffirmed its policy Deny copyright protection to works “without any creative input or intervention of a human author”. this is a big problem. Governments choosing to require a human touch in the equation would weaken the commercial incentive to create purely AI-generated work, since no single individual can claim to be an “original creator” worthy of a monopoly to monetize it. Pure AI generative art belongs to all of us and is in the public domain – something that IP development studio heads need to keep in mind.

people oriented

Combining these three actions and applying them to the Hollywood writers strike, how studios choose to respond to the AI threat on fundamental issues of payment, credit, and overall inclusion mirrors the choices they make about the teams they belong to. If that choice is Team Human, and AI is seen as an exciting new tool to support the writer’s craft, then the correct answer is simple. The priority of human writers must be locked down.

At the very least, Team Human is calling on Hollywood to respect the writer’s position for at least six months (a suspension similar to the one recently imposed by tech celebrity) and revisit the state of the AI revolution afterwards. Why would the studio accept anything else? Ultimately, signing with Team Human could save everyone in Hollywood, including executives. It’s a quick descent from giving orders to obeying robots. This is the only answer if they want to fight the long game for their jobs.
