Dubai: To mark World Refugee Day on June 20, NRS International and London College of Fashion social artist Professor Helen Storey will launch the #LoveCoats project, July 9-17, to empower girls in the Zaatari refugee camp in Jordan. right.

The #LoveCoats concept was created in collaboration with Tiger (these inspiring girls love to read) girls and was promoted in Dubai during the annual Dubai International Humanitarian Aid and Development Conference & Exhibition (Dihad) in March.

The partnership has invited Tiger Girls from the Zaatari refugee camp to participate in the #LoveCoats project. It aims to empower 1,250 teenage girls through fashion and design, with plans to develop their technical skills and create clothes for next winter.

“If we need hope in this world, working with the Tiger Ladies of Zaatari is where you can find it. From the moment I first met them and their coaches, it was clear that despite There’s been so much difficulty, there’s so much female spirit and hard work here,” Storey said.

She explained that girls “aim high, that’s what they are supposed to be, and that anything we can do to continue to support and help them reach their full potential as young women will serve us all”.

Through the #LoveCoats project, design workshops will create a creative learning environment for Tiger Girls. They will have the opportunity to improve their fashion design skills and pass them on to young girls – creating a legacy that will last for years to come. The parties are also considering a partnership with UAE Fashion Week to showcase #LoveCoats’ various designs on fashion shows in Dubai.

Farhaj Sarwar, managing director of NRS International, said he was inspired by Storey’s previous projects using the power of fashion to address the world’s most pressing issues.

“Professor Storey explained refugee girls’ fear of the cold in winter. This led to our collaboration, which was in line with what we offer as a company, which is relief items. Providing blanket material was just a natural response. Impressed with such a stylish transformation,” Sarwar said.

As part of the UAE Year of Giving, NRS International donated 1,000 meters of insulation blanket material to Storey. Durable material meets UN refugee agency specifications. In 2016, NRS International sold 3.9 million of these blankets to leading aid organizations around the world.

World Refugee Day 2017

World Refugee Day was first established in 2001. The annual event is marked by events in more than 100 countries, involving government officials, aid workers, celebrities, civilians and the forcibly displaced themselves. The conflict in Syria remains the world’s largest producer of refugees (5.5 million). At the end of 2016, however, the biggest new factor was South Sudan, where a catastrophic collapse of peace efforts in July of that year led to an exodus of 739,900 people at the end of the year (1.87 million today).

Globally, 65.6 million people have been displaced by crises. This includes:

22.5 million refugees (the highest ever), more than half of whom are under the age of 18

40.3 million stateless/internal displaced persons

2.8 million asylum seekers.

This means that on average 1 in 113 people worldwide is displaced – a population larger than that of the United Kingdom, the world’s 21st most populous country.

Every minute 20 people are forcibly displaced due to conflict or persecution.

55% of the world’s refugees come from three countries:

Syria: 5.5 million

Afghanistan: 2.5 million

South Sudan: 1.4 million
