MINNEAPOLIS, May 12 (AP) — A Minnesota man was found guilty of first-degree murder Thursday for beheading his girlfriend in front of several witnesses.
Alexis Saborit, 44, was found guilty of the July 2021 killing of America Thayer, 56.
The Minneapolis Star-Tribune reported that Saborit hit Thayer with an 8-pound dumbbell in a car near downtown Shakopee before he decapitated her with a machete.
People in other cars and nearby homes saw the attack. One of them filmed a video that showed Saborit dragging Thayer’s body from the car into the street, then lifting her head by pulling her hair.
Saborit and Thayer were on their way to his court appearance on felony charges alleging he set fire to their Shakopee apartment during a standoff with police and that Saborit assaulted Thayer after Thayer told him she wanted to end their relationship.
Saborit fled the scene, disposing of the machete en route. He was arrested 1.5 miles away near the TraveLodge hotel where he was staying.
County Attorney Ron Hocevar said he was satisfied with the verdict and said he wanted Saborit to be sentenced to life without the possibility of parole. (Associated Press)
