Toto Wolff explains the polarizing effect of Max Verstappen’s controversial Abu Dhabi victory in 2021 on fans

[ad_1]

Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff recently revealed an interesting incident that happened shortly after the 2021 Abu Dhabi fiasco. He explained how a nanny approached him looking for a job, and she feared she wouldn’t be hired because she was Dutch and liked Max Verstappen.

Speaking of nanny fears, Wolfe Tell De Telegraaf said in a recent talk, “i asked why (She was afraid of not getting the job). She thought I hated Max Verstappen. But I really like Max.”

Given how their conversation turned out, it’s fair to say that the aftermath of the 2021 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix could be one of the most polarizing events, with even fans forced to take sides. Whatever happened at the time, Wolff seems to have moved on and now has nothing but respect for the Dutchman.

Toto Wolff speaks highly of Max Verstappen

In the same conversation with De Telegraaf, Toto Wolff explains how Max Verstappen has become stronger and stronger. The 51-year-old explained that the Red Bull driver has now become “abenchmark’ because of the way he was able to maximize the package his team gave him.

Wolff also believes Verstappen has “matured” a lot recently and has the championship mentality of the likes of Ayrton Senna, Michael Schumacher and Lewis Hamilton. The Mercedes team principal then summed up his remarks by saying that he enjoyed working with those who aspired to reach the top.

What happened at the 2021 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix?

The 2021 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix is arguably one of the most contentious, chaotic and exciting F1 races of all time. The race decided one of the closest title fights between Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen.

Both drivers come to the season finale in Abu Dhabi with the same points, meaning the winner takes the crown. Considering the results of most of the races, fans around the world are convinced that, barring a miracle, Hamilton will go on to win races and claim a record eighth F1 title.

However, the miracle did happen after Nicolas Latifi hit the barrier. As a result, race control dispatched a safety car with just a few laps remaining in the race. Although Hamilton is still ahead of Verstappen in second place at this time, he has lost all advantage due to the safety car.

To make matters worse, some controversial decisions by then race director Michael Masi tipped the match entirely in the Dutchman’s favour. Masi initially said all overlapping cars would be allowed to pass the race leader before reversing his decision shortly thereafter.

He ultimately decided to only allow the lap car between Hamilton and Verstappen to unwind on its own, ensuring a one-lap spectacle between the two. Massey’s controversial decision helped Verstappen go straight to Hamilton on the final lap and pass him shortly thereafter to win the race and his first title.
