Abu Dhabi: A pair of killer whales have been spotted off the coast of the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
The pair of orcas were first spotted in Abu Dhabi on Tuesday.
On Wednesday, Dubai Crown Prince Sheikh Hamdan bin Rashid shared a video of an orca spotted off the coast of Jeba Ali on his Instagram Story.
“This is truly a rare and beautiful creature to behold,” wrote Sheikh Hamdan.
The Abu Dhabi Environment Agency (EAD) is urging residents to avoid marine mammals when out in the water.
“A pair of orcas, also known as killer whales, were spotted off the coast of Abu Dhabi. They are one of the most traveled marine wildlife and are adapted to cooler climates and warmer waters. Although this is rare , but their frequent visits to Abu Dhabi waters is a testament to the healthy marine life that calls Abu Dhabi home,” EAD said in a post on Instagram.
“Orcas do not normally pose a threat to humans. However, we urge the public to maintain a safe distance when sighting wildlife and to notify the Abu Dhabi Government Call Center on 800 555 if they notice anything unusual,” the authority added.
Killer whales, also known as orcas, are a rare sight in the UAE. However, fishermen in the area sometimes spot marine wildlife.
Orcas can mistake humans for something they eat, such as seals.
