A longtime Monty Python fan, Bob Franklin is delighted to have been chosen to direct “Spamalot” at the Aiken Community Theatre. The season-ending musical, written by members of the comedy troupe, covers a variety of material from Monty Python’s catalog, including “Life of Brian” and “Searching for the Holy Grail.”
“As with any Monty Python show, audiences have to contend with unexpected circumstances in the production of everything from Broadway musicals and plagues to religion, heroines, and more,” says Franklin. Laughing so hard you miss the next comedy moment, but that’s okay. They’ll enjoy what they see and hear.”
“Spamalot” retells the legend of King Arthur and his Knights of the Round Table and features a troupe of beautiful showgirls, cows, killer rabbits, and more. The 2005 Broadway production won three Tony Awards, including Best Musical, and was followed by two successful West End productions.
Even though Franklin is a huge fan of Monty Python, the show still isn’t his usual theatrical output. He tends to direct shows that make viewers think, such as “Inherit the Wind,” “On Golden Pond,” “Frost/Nixon,” “To Kill a Mockingbird,” and “Mice and Men.”
“Directing this show required a very different directorial skill set. The characters are all caricatures, and the sheer number of technical, musical and choreographic requirements have been challenging,” he said. “I have been fortunate to work with a talented and dedicated cast and crew who bring me great joy as a director.
“I’m sure audiences will be amazed by the talent that this production brings together, from the cast to the music direction (David Brown) to the choreography (Anna Lewis) to the costumes (Beth Unsed) to the set design (Duane Berning) to Props (RJ Wall and others) to lighting (Cory Herbst) to sound (Chris Martino) and stage management (Lisa Fountain),” Franklin said. “Trusting the professionals is a joy.”
“Spamalot” is on May 19th, 20th, 25th, 26th, 27th and May 21st at 2pm at the Amentum Performing Arts Center at 126 Newberry St. SW.
