Abu Dhabi Book Fair showcases Turkish culture as guest of honor

The Abu Dhabi International Book Fair (ADIBF), which will be held at the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Center from May 22-28, will have the Republic of Turkey as the country of honor in 2023.

The fair will welcome the Turkish Pavilion, whose dynamic program emphasizes cultural exchange between Turkish and Arab cultures, and will also present Turkish literature, children’s books and Turkish cuisine.

The expo, which will be held for the 32nd time, will rediscover the historical and cultural ties between Turkey and the Arab world, aiming to strengthen the relationship between different regions and cultures through the exposition holding diversified discussions and dialogues on cultural exchanges between the two cultures. dialogue between.

Publishers and industry professionals from across the country, including the Ministry of Culture and Tourism and the Istanbul Chamber of Commerce (ITO), will also meet book lovers at the fair.

This year’s highlight is the 14th century Arab philosopher Ibn Khaldun, considered one of the pioneers of the social sciences. The program will include conferences and seminars focusing on the work and legacy of Ibn Khaldun, including discussions of history, philosophy and literature.

Speakers will include critics and scholars such as Tunisian historian and archaeologist Ibrahim Shabouh, philosopher Ahmed Barqawi and British author Anthony Sattin, known for his work on Ibn Khaldun.

The theme of ADIBF 2023 was determined to be “Sustainable Development” to coincide with the “Year of Sustainable Development” plan, in which the United Arab Emirates (UAE) will host the climate change-focused COP28 conference in November.

As well as inspiring events focused on the future of the planet, the show will include panels and discussions exploring broader sustainability perspectives and ways to make publishing more sustainable.

Famous Turkish authors such as Beşir Ayvazoğlu and Mehmet Hakkı Suçin will be present at various symposiums and seminars on the history of Turkish literature, Arabic and Turkish poetry, and literary translation between the two languages.

Visitors will also have the opportunity to listen to renowned academic leaders, writers and poets representing Turkey such as Ahmet Ümit, Beşir Ayvazoğlu, Ömer Erdem and Sunay Akın.

To highlight the rich heritage of Turkish cuisine and its connection to literature, a series of discussions and interactive workshops will be held featuring renowned authors, expert historians and chefs, including Arda Türkmen, Arif Bilgin, Mary Işın, Ömür Akkor and Saygın Ersin.

Throughout the fair, there will also be exhibitions featuring Turkish paintings, illustrations and manuscripts, as well as a retrospective exploring the life and work of renowned Turkish painter Zahit Büyükişliyen.

Show attendees will also have the opportunity to hear from international creatives from a variety of fields, including Matt Ridley, author of The Rational Optimist and How Innovation Works, lecturer at Oxford University, Spanish philosopher and author Ca Lisa Veliz University Institute of Ethics and Artificial Intelligence and Ali Tabrizi, director of “At Sea,” one of Netflix’s 10 most-watched movies worldwide in 2021.

Organized by the Abu Dhabi Arabic Language Center under the Abu Dhabi Department of Culture and Tourism, the expo will host more than 1,300 participants from some 90 countries, including authors, publishers, creatives and other industries professional.

The expo invites attendees to entertain, educate and engage with experiences ranging from book signings by renowned authors to comprehensive panel discussions, creative workshops, live art performances and concerts.
