The Ministry of Health and Prevention (MoHAP), in partnership with the International Society of Hypertension and campaign sponsors, has launched a national campaign for early detection of hypertension.

This year, the campaign plans to test 50,000 adults across the country during May and June, in partnership with government and private health agencies, universities, Life Pharmacies, Emirates Heart Association, Servier and Omron.

Themed “Don’t Wait! Participate and Take Care: Monitor Your Blood Pressure and Embrace Confident, Healthy Living,” the campaign aims to raise health awareness within the community about the importance of checking blood pressure, adopting a healthy lifestyle, and understanding the causes of high blood pressure. Factors in blood pressure and its complications.

It also aims to reduce the incidence of non-communicable diseases in line with the goals of the sustainable development strategy.

Dr. Hussain Abdul Rahman Al Rand, Assistant Undersecretary for Public Health, Dr. Buthaina Abdullah bin Balila, Director, Non-Communicable Diseases Department, Ministry of Health; attended the launch ceremony in Dubai. There were also representatives from government and private health entities and universities.

Dr Al Rand said the national campaign will support the UAE’s plans to combat non-communicable diseases and strengthen the prevention and control of hypertension based on best international practices based on scientific research and evidence.

He emphasized that the UAE is at the forefront of countries implementing programs and initiatives aimed at reducing the prevalence of diseases, including high blood pressure, as part of the Strategic Health Indicators. The national goal is to reduce the incidence of hypertension by 30% by 2030, ultimately improve the quality of life of individuals, and create a healthy society with sustainable well-being. This can be achieved by prioritizing prevention over treatment, guided by a clear vision of effective initiatives, programs and projects.

“The national campaign was initially launched on May 1, 2017, and was subsequently rolled out in 2018 and 2019 in partnership with government health agencies and the private health sector. As a result, the country has achieved No. 1 in the region,” said Al Rand, urging attendees, strategic partners and community members to actively participate in the event.

Dr Buthaina stressed that the national campaign will help promote public health and strengthen prevention and health commitments, adding that the ministry has in place effective plans to administer prevention and community health programs to improve the quality of healthy life across the country.

She added that the event will offer free blood pressure screening services, during which basic demographic and clinical information as well as blood pressure measurements will be collected by nurses, trained volunteers and the country’s network of pharmacies.

Dr Buthaina said MoHAP is committed to regularly updating the scientific evidence based on the latest international practice and research. In 2019, the fourth update of the Hypertension Guidelines was published to help build the skills of healthcare professionals, and preparations are underway for the release of the updated 2023 edition.
