The announcement coincides with the Respect for the Aged Day, a national holiday in Japan.

The organization said on Monday that the two Japanese sisters have been certified by the Guinness Book of World Records as the world’s longest-lived identical twins, aged 107 years and 330 days.

The announcement coincides with Japan’s National Holiday Respect for the Aged Day.

Sisters Umeno Sumiyama and Koume Kodama were born on November 5, 1913 in Shodoshima, western Japan, as the third and fourth of the 11 brothers.

Guinness World Records Co., Ltd. said in a statement that as of September 1, the sisters broke the record of 107 years and 175 days set by the famous Japanese twin sisters Kin Narita and Gin Kanie.

According to data from the Ministry of Health and Welfare of Japan, Japan is the country with the fastest aging rate in the world, with approximately 29% of its 125 million population being 65 years of age or older. About 86,510 of them are centenarians-half of them are 100 years old this year.

After graduating from elementary school, Moyama and Kodama separated. At that time, Kodama was sent to work as a maid in Oita, the main island of Kyushu in southern Japan. Later she got married there, while Sumyama stayed on the island where they grew up and had her own family.

The sisters later recalled the difficult days of their youth. As they grew up, they said that because of Japan’s prejudice against multiple births, they became targets of bullying.

For decades, the sisters have been busy with their lives and did not meet until the age of 70, when they began to make pilgrimages to some of the 88 Shikoku temples together and enjoyed re-establishing contact.

Their family told the Guinness Book of World Records that the sisters often joked that they lived longer than the early record holders. They were affectionately called “Golden Mountain, Golden Mountain”, and they earned it in the late 1990s for their age and humor. Iconic status.

According to Guinness, due to the anti-coronavirus measures, their new record certificate was mailed to the separate nursing home where they now live, and Sumyama ecstatically accepted her certificate.
