First UAE-UK strategic dialogue: Key takeaways

Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan, UAE Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, in the UK with the Secretary of State for Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Affairs, UK and Northern Ireland , Commonwealth and Development Secretary James Cleverley MP is in the UK for the first strategic dialogue. The UAE-UK Strategic Dialogue builds on the visit of UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan in 2021, during which the two leaders agreed to a future-oriented partnership.

The UAE delegation included Dr. Anwar Gargash, the diplomatic adviser to the President of the UAE; Majid Al Suwaidi, Director General and Special Representative of COP28, and other senior ministers and diplomats, according to the state news agency. Wan.

Strengthening relationships through strategic dialogue

A joint communiqué issued after the meeting noted that the strategic dialogue underscores the strength of the bilateral relationship, shared history, and enduring commitment to deepening ties and strengthening people-to-people ties.

Ministers reiterated their commitment to growing their relationship and welcomed enhanced partnerships across a range of sectors. Both sides welcomed the first strategic dialogue as an important moment in bilateral relations.

UAE-UK trade relations

The UAE-UK Strategic Dialogue highlighted the historical trade links between the two countries, which include important sectors such as aviation, energy and growing clean energy. They point to the success of growing trade in goods and services between the two countries, now at a record high of £21.6bn over the four quarters to the end of the fourth quarter of 2022.

COP28

Ministers discussed the importance of an inclusive and ambitious agenda for the UNFCCC COP (COP28) will be held in Dubai Expo City in November 2023.

According to a joint communiqué issued after the meeting, the two ministers reiterated the importance of a strong and unified response to the global stocktake.They also reiterated the need to close ambition gaps in mitigation, adaptation, loss and damage, and climate finance to achieve the goals of the Paris Agreement, including Keeping 1.5C within reach; Halt and reverse global forest and biodiversity loss.

Dialogue with the future

The two countries are preparing to participate in the eighth session of the UAE-UK Joint Economic Council (JEC) scheduled for later this year. The two sides will also hold the fourth round of UK-GCC free trade agreement negotiations hosted by the UK in 2023.

The ministers reaffirmed their countries’ commitment to solidify cooperation in the illicit financial sector under the framework of the UAE-UK Partnership to Combat Illicit Financial Flows signed in September 2021.

Following the strategic dialogue, Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan met other senior British leaders such as Energy Security Secretary Grant Shapps. Shapps and shadow foreign secretary David Lammy.
