A new partnership between the Emirates Foundation and the Emirates Nature Foundation will see around 400 Takatof volunteers take part in a range of environmental volunteering activities to protect nature and biodiversity in the UAE.

Through this partnership, volunteers from the UAE Foundation’s Takatof program will engage in conservation and citizen science activities as part of the wider UAEWF-WWF Leaders for Change program, which will expand their contribution to the UAE’s rich biodiversity Learn about and develop a passion for nature.

The partnership aims to empower community members and youth to maximize their impact and build a world where people and nature thrive together. The series of initiatives, running through November, will provide citizens and expatriates with opportunities to volunteer for important social causes.

“It has never been more important for individuals and communities to do their part in protecting the UAE’s precious environment. Every project will have a very significant impact and drive major change towards a more sustainable future,” said UAE said Ahmed Taleb Al Shamsi, chief executive of the foundation.

Each event also contributes to national efforts to protect nature and combat climate change on the way to the Year of Sustainable Development and UAE COP28.

“After the UAE President declared 2023 the Year of Sustainability, we hope Takatof volunteers will inspire others and show that everyone’s efforts count when it comes to protecting the planet,” Al Shamsi noted.

Leaders for Change, the UAE’s pioneering civic mobilization campaign, inspires volunteers to create change on the ground through training, ideation sessions and exciting volunteering excursions. By engaging volunteers with nature and creating opportunities to explore wild spaces and wildlife, the program aims to change the nation’s internal mindset, empowering individuals to create and implement solutions that have a transformative impact on people and the planet.

“An active civil society, where everyone is empowered to have a measurable impact on nature and conservation, is the pathway to a green and sustainable future for all,” said Laila Mostafa, Director General, WWF-WWF Abdullatif emphasized.

“We are excited to partner with the Emirates Foundation’s Takatof program to inspire more Emiratis to volunteer in nature for nature. Through our Change Leaders conservation campaigns and field trips, volunteers will discover [the] The UAE’s rich natural heritage and the science behind its conservation efforts also have a meaningful impact on people and the planet,” she added.

Upcoming volunteer opportunities include:

  • Conservation Kayaking event at Reem Central Park, Abu Dhabi on September 17th. On this guided kayak tour, volunteers will learn about the mangrove ecosystem, collect and remove litter, and geotagged data around litter to inform national policy on single-use plastics.
  • “Protecting Our Pollinators” took place on 22 October in Wadi Naqab, Ras Al Khaimah. Native plants and insects such as bees and butterflies are critical to the health and function of ecosystems. As part of the campaign, volunteers will restore pollinator habitat and plant wildflowers and plants to create safe havens for these important insects.
  • “Trash Watchers” in Qidfa, Fujairah on November 18. Volunteers work towards the goals of #noplasticinnature by documenting litter found in natural spaces and geotagging it for safe disposal.
