ROME, May 21 (AP) – Europe’s most active volcano, Mount Etna, erupted Sunday, spewing ash into Catania, the largest city in eastern Sicily, forcing the closure of the city’s airport.

Italy’s National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV), which closely monitors Mount Etna with instruments on the slopes, noted that rainy clouds obscured the view of the eruption, which often presents spectacular displays of burning lava during volcanic hiatus Erupts infrequently.
