Three Dutch nationals were killed when their light plane crashed in the mountains of northwestern Croatia, the Dutch foreign ministry said on Sunday.

Croatia Airlines investigators said the crash happened around noon local time on Saturday in a forest near the town of Ogulin, after a Dutch-registered plane was en route from Maribor, Slovenia, to the Adriatic Sea in Croatia. Off-the-coast flight from Pula disappeared from radar.

All passengers on board the plane were killed and the wreckage of the plane had been destroyed by fire, Chief Aviation Inspector Dan Kopetlin told reporters.

“We will need to do DNA analysis because the location of the accident prevents us from visually determining the exact number,” Petrin said, adding that two people were registered as passengers along with the pilot.

Three Dutch nationals were killed in the crash, Dutch foreign ministry spokeswoman Felicia Bakker told Reuters.

Croatian investigators said the cause of the accident was not yet known but an investigation had been launched.

The crash site, which is difficult to reach, is in an area known for possible landmines, according to Dutch authorities.
