‘Haunted House of Horror’ – Sixteenth Movie Surprise Offers Campy Entertainment [The Amityville IP]

[ad_1]

Joe Lipsett dissects a new ghost cry wolf howl The film explores how the “franchise” has gone in increasingly ludicrous directions. This is “Amityville IP”.

My hunch about higher production values amityville horror (2016) The results are real, and whether it’s a slightly more refined look or a professional cast, the 16th film in the “franchise” is certainly the best in quite some time.

It’s a grade because there are still some very glaring problems with the movie, but overall, the director michelangelo Has delivered a very entertaining DTV movie with soft echoes of the rest of the franchise.

Found out after the cold open that this is an enveloping storyline, Amanda BartonThe script quickly establishes a familiar foundation: a troubled family moves into a suspiciously cheap house on Amity Lane, and the bad energy eventually manifests itself as a murderous act.not like previous entry, amityville horror Not against the family patriarch; this time it’s painter and recovering drug addict Shae Jacobson (Amanda Barton), the main character Hayley’s aunt (Nicole Tompkins), who is possessed.

Hailey is a really interesting protagonist: she rides a motorcycle, she shoots crossbows at will, and she refuses to take crap from the mean girls at school led by the vicious, possessive Theresa (christie st john). This includes taking action against Brett (trevor stans), Theresa thinks the boy is her boyfriend, but he has a crush on Hailey.

Early in the film, Hayley reveals that she and her parents Todd (Kevi Lyman-Mesereau) and Jessica (Kim Nelson), moved from San Francisco to Amityville after Todd and Shae’s mother passed away. She bonded with Brett in part because they both lost family members: his mother died of cancer, and her brother died when she was very young. These details help flesh out the characters, though they also add to the film’s focus.

Every character has at least one or two issues that have nothing to do with the main property’s plot, but are all very superficial because there are too many characters and too many subplots. Example: Todd and Jessica are having intimacy issues in their relationship and he is watching Karen, a fellow auto mechanic (claudia kay). Meanwhile, Todd’s boss, Mike Arcos (Bobby Emprechtinger) reveals that he dated Shae, even though the two characters never share any scenes or dialogue (so how important is this information?)

And property manager Delilah McCallister (Secret MVP Tonya Kay), strutting around town in leather jackets and sassy asymmetrical blondes. Kay makes no effort to hide the character’s obvious villainy, making her a bumbling happy figure despite not having much to do.

The most egregious example of this comes nearly an hour into the film, when Brett takes Hayley to meet an all-new character: teenage witch Jenny Chan (Lailing Bernstein). Jenny hesitantly agrees to cast a protective spell on Hayley, but she’s actually killed a few minutes later in the second scene, which begs the question: is the role really necessary?death could easily be one of them amityville horrorThe best, but Barton’s script spends so little time with these characters that none of them have a chance to really shine.

The biggest problem is that amityville horror: It has a lot of interesting ideas and characters, but doesn’t have time to explore half of them. Much of the town is involved in a conspiracy to keep “feeding” the haunted house with tenants sacrificed, which is fun, but it’s too vaguely defined and executed too hastily to be a satisfying twist , not even a threat. This way it is similar to the last reveal Amityville Theaterwhich aimed to be ominously menacing and turned out to be confusing and poorly executed.

This is especially frustrating considering that amityville horror Well worth a look. Hayley is a funny, strong protagonist with eccentricities, and the film has plenty of quirky details and a campy style to make it a memorable viewing experience.sets, including Jesse’s madness in a rosebush, teenage girls scuffling in a cemetery, and final destination-Slo-mo shots at Todd’s work, all solid (despite some dodgy FX, whatever).

Finally, the (rushed) climax features some surprising gore and cinematographer/editing Michael Ojeda Good at using shadows and colors to build space and add tension.Throw in some casual nudity and incest (key Howling Element! )and amityville horror Easily the most-watched DTV entry since the “core franchise” ran.

3.5 out of 5

this Howling Intellectual Property Awards go to…

  • Most difficult moment: When Mike and Delilah confront the house, she’s having sex with a random guy in the kitchen. Delilah and Mike then proceed to have a full conversation while the sex continues and her breasts are exposed. It’s so casual and kind of funny.
  • Best Accidentally Funny Visual Effects: At one point, Hailey researched the house’s former occupants using the website www.nextofkin.com, displayed in 48-point font on a lime-green and orange landing page. It’s an extremely ugly replacement for a real search engine, but it’s delightful.
  • Best Dialogue: After firing her sexual partner, Delilah ends her conversation with Mike, pulling up her skirt and announcing, “It’s like Vegas, Mike: Never short the house.” The character is terrific.
  • Best Dialogue 2: After Mike is set ablaze in a workplace accident, a drunken Todd comes home and announces, “I killed Mike today,” to which Jessica replies, “Well, the accident happened.” When Shae is spotted a few scenes later in disguise As Jess, it made sense, but in that moment, it was a hilarious exchange.
  • Script gaffe: Maybe it got lost in the rewrite, but Brett isn’t named until 48 minutes into the movie, by which time he’s been on screen at least 3 times. Before that, Hailey was basically in a romantic relationship with a boy who didn’t want to introduce himself.
  • Amityville tie: An artist perverted by the house returns to Suki new generationand incest was as inappropriately passionate as Andrea’s lust for Rusty Amityville 1992: It’s Time (Although in this case the aggressive kitchen sex is real and not fantasy).
  • Best Death: Most of the deaths happen off-screen, but two stand out. One is the whereabouts of Jess, whose body was found hollowed out in his bedroom after a bout of weakness. The Shining Respect. Another neatly set up: Hailey is thrown out of her bedroom, the door slams shut, and Jenny’s screams and the sound of glass shattering fill the soundtrack. As Hayley bursts in, the camera zooms through the shattered window into thin air, before tilting down 90 degrees to capture Jenny’s shattered body on the fountain below. It’s smart, fun, and looks great.

Next time: We’re discussing the fifth and final time Howling Movies coming out in 2016: Discovery Lens Movies, Amityville: No Escape.
