France has banned short-haul flights where people can take trains to cut carbon emissions.

The ban affects journeys that can be made by train in less than two-and-a-half hours, excluding flights between Paris and Nantes, Lyon and Bordeaux.

Connecting flights are not affected by the ban.

The move was originally proposed to impose tighter restrictions on any journeys that could be made by train in less than four hours.

It was included in 2021 climate legislation but faced strong opposition from the airline industry.

After opposition, the train journey time was reduced to two and a half hours.

The law also stipulates that train routes must be frequent and able to meet the demand of passengers traveling by air.

France has the second largest rail network in Europe, allowing low-cost, high-speed travel across the country.
