ABU DHABI: Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi (CCAD) has launched a microvascular and coronary spasm testing program to help patients who have been suffering from unexplained chest disease for many years.
The Invasive Microvascular and Coronary Spasm Program evaluates patients for heart disease that causes angina due to spasm or inadequate dilation of the coronary arteries. The conditions might not otherwise have been detected during routine heart exams, the hospital said in a statement Tuesday.
Therefore, CCAD incorporates a complete microvascular dysfunction and coronary spasm program. This highly sophisticated test method requires specialized interventional cardiologists and specialized equipment that can screen for abnormalities in large coronary arteries as well as abnormalities in very small arteries that cannot be detected by the human eye.
Without sophisticated testing, standard coronary angiography would fail to detect these conditions, and patients end up suffering recurring chest pains that have been wrongly attributed to conditions such as stress and anxiety.
Who is more at risk?
These conditions appear to be more prevalent in women, according to hospital experts. Those who smoked, had diabetes, or high blood pressure were also more likely to develop microvascular angina, or coronary artery spasm, which puts them at higher risk for heart disease.
