ESA strengthens UAE’s position as a key global maritime center

The Emirates Shipping Association (ESA) has cemented the UAE’s position as a key global maritime hub through the success of its ‘Maritime Future Dialogue’ event.

An integral part of UAE Maritime Week, the event attracts influential industry players, stakeholders and experts. The gathering fostered connections, the exchange of ideas, and the formation of valuable partnerships.

The goal of the Emirates Shipping Association is to make the UAE an important global shipping hub. As such, the Maritime Dialogue included influential panel discussions on key priorities, including advocating for UAE flag registration and strengthening efforts to decarbonise the shipping industry. Industry leaders, regulators and experts came together to discuss strategies to strengthen the industry’s world-class status under the upcoming UAE Maritime Law.

Additionally, insights from the COP28 team and the International Chamber of Shipping are shared, highlighting opportunities at COP28. These discussions have fostered collaboration, knowledge exchange and positioned the UAE as a global leader in the maritime sector.

One of the highlights of the event was the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between ESA and the UAE Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure (MOI UAE) to further enhance the capabilities of the Blue Pass initiative through cooperation and mutual support.

Launched by the ministry in partnership with Marihub, the platform aims to strengthen the national maritime sector by creating a digital cluster of local and international maritime authorities and associations, such as ESA, to facilitate exchange of services and attract foreign investors. Through a state-of-the-art online portal and smart applications, the project will provide transparent and seamless services, including supply, support services and discounts, thereby making the UAE an attractive offshore investment destination.

Captain Abdulkareem Al Masabi, Chairman of the Emirates Shipping Association, highlighted: “As part of UAE Maritime Week, we are delighted to host the ‘Maritime Future Dialogue’ event. It is a great opportunity for industry leaders, stakeholders and experts to come together and An excellent opportunity to strengthen the UAE’s position as a global maritime power. Through productive discussions and collaborative efforts, we aim to foster innovation, drive sustainable growth, and build valuable partnerships in the maritime sector.”

He added: “By joining forces with Emirates Blue Pass, we are further demonstrating our commitment to enhancing seamless maritime operations in the UAE. This collaboration will allow us to leverage advanced technology and streamlined processes, ultimately benefiting our members And strengthen the maritime industry as a whole. We look forward to the opportunities and synergies this partnership brings.”

Hessa Al Malek, Adviser to the Minister of Maritime and Affairs at the UAE Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure, said, “The Blue Pass project aims to build an integrated maritime business community where everyone can easily provide services and meet their requirements through a unified digital portal. The project not only provides a platform for maritime services and supplies, but also unifies the common needs of companies and ships in the industry. This facilitates collective purchasing power and discounts for various support services, such as financing, insurance, training and port services. The project is expected to re- Shaping the investment climate in the UAE and the maritime sector in the region, creating incentives to attract investors.”

Anders Ostergaard, Secretary-General of the Emirates Shipping Association and CEO of Monjasa Group, shared his thoughts at the signing of the agreement: “For many years, the shipping industry has been a key driver of economic growth in the UAE. This is why we at ESA have been committed to promoting progress and development of the industry and enhance its capabilities in all aspects.”

Anders added: “Our vision is to promote opportunities in the UAE as a port of registry and to explore partnerships and mechanisms through which we can make this an efficient one. Dialogue between MOEI, DMA, classification societies, ports in different states, financial institutions and other relevant stakeholders, engaging players from different fields locally and internationally to ensure that the UAE flag is indeed a prominent face. Our strategic alliances and Association members are our strength and we welcome you to join this community.”

The event, attended by MOEI UAE, energy majors and some of the world’s leading classification societies, explores and assesses the most pressing issues facing the industry, arrives at practical solutions to these issues and plans for the coming years direction of progress. Representatives of these key maritime entities engaged in an in-depth discussion on the current state of maritime law in the UAE and its impact on the industry, sharing their insights into the implementation and impact of these laws and identifying the range of benefits these laws can bring to the industry .
